Leiomyosarcoma patients turn to food to help with cancer

cancer stats

These statistics show how many people can be diagnosed with cancers that are well known versus that of Leiomyosarcoma patients.

There are many cancers that affect the human body; some are well known by the entire world and some are rare.  Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a type of rare cancer that affects the muscle tissues of the human body. Smooth muscle cells make up the involuntary muscles, which are found in most parts of the body, including the uterus, stomach and intestines, the walls of all blood vessels, and the skin.  It is therefore possible for LMS to appear at any site in the body.  The first case of LMS was found in 1994, according to a Case Study done by the University of Ontario.  This cancer only accounts for 5%-10% of all soft tissue sarcomasFamous people like Padma L. Atluri, a writer for 90210 and Men in Trees, and Katie Price (Jordan), an English media personality, both suffered from LMS.  Cancer doesn’t discriminate who it will affect, but there are plenty of treatment options for people suffering from LMS.  Treatment options include traditional methods (surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy) and alternative methods (I.V. injections from Europe, herbal immune tinctures, and infrared sauna bed), both of which can benefit from a drastic diet change.

sprouts

Brussels sprouts are one of the cruciferous vegetables recommended for LMS patients to eat. This delicious dish with brussels sprouts was made by a chef at a Fry’s Marketplace located in Phoenix, Arizona (Photo By Christina Thompson 2012).

When looking at the traditional methods of curing LMS, most doctors will say that surgery is the best option.  Chemotherapy and radiation are there to help get the tumor small enough to operate on. “Radiotherapy may be a useful additive to improve local control or where cancer is inoperable.  In some cases of high-grade leiomyosarcoma, chemotherapy may have a role to reduce the risk of recurrence or to improve operability.  It is important to realize that the treatment of leiomyosarcoma is a complicated process.  Associated with the treatment of the disease are the very real long-term sequels of these treatments in those in whom they establish a cure.  The surgical sequel can be serious and immediately evident following a wide excision of primary tumors,” says the Virtual Medical Center.   The outcome and affects that each of these treatments have on a single person with LMS, all depends on their own immune system.  When LMS patients chose surgery, their survival rate significantly increases to about 90% for five years.  Rosalie Peipert, an LMS patient, wrote a blog about her struggles with this rare cancer.  In the blog she says, “My tumors were hanging outside the lungs like icicles (spindle cells). Almost 3 years later I had to have the same operation for 4 more nodes in both lungs. This is a very painful surgery because it hurts to breathe in the beginning and the sternum hurts from being opened. Only thing was the drugs hyped me up so badly, I never slept and couldn’t rest in bed. This time, I asked for someone to come down and see me from the Pain Clinic. It was a big help. I had an epidural and the PCA pump. I don’t know why my first surgeon did not tell me I didn’t have to suffer the way I did. I have never had chemo or radiation. I have a low grade LMS. I was very lucky that I could be a candidate for surgery.”  Many patients with LMS are like Rosalie.  She goes on to say, “Update: April 2000…my fight is ongoing. I had surgery to remove a 7 cm retroperitoneal tumor on March 8, 2000. It was encapsulated and taken out. No other tumors. It was LMS again. After almost 19 yrs, it returned to the scene of the original crime in the pelvic area.  Update: March 2001…I had another recurrence in both lungs.  Update: November 2001… I have been on hormone therapy 9 months now and am stable. Update: 2006… June 24th, my family and I celebrated a duel anniversary, my 25th year of survival of low grade myxoid LMS/ESS and our 50th wedding anniversary.”  The treatment options and life of people who get the diagnosis of Leiomyosarcoma; they have surgery or chemotherapy to get rid of the cancer and it will come back in a different area.

Dr. Peter Mathern, an oncologist in Phoenix, Arizona, discusses why LMS patients should chose to go the traditional therapy route, over just a diet change or alternative therapies.

Although most doctors will say that traditional methods are the only way to cure LMS, there are new alternative methods being discovered all the time.  Dr. Joe Brown, N.M.D., of Tempe, Arizona, offers LMS patients (along with many other cancer types) different treatment options besides the traditional methods.  Dr. Brown’s website lists some of the options including: “Ukrain (Chelidonium Majus) I.V. Mixture, Immune Injection Therapy with Engystol, Acupuncture with Heat and Stimulation, and Oral Vitamin Supplementation.”  Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center are revolutionizing alternative cancer treatments by using Immunotherapy to help patients treat LMS and other cancers.  Cancer immunotherapy attempts to stimulate the immune system to reject and destroy tumors.   There are many types of cancer immunotherapy treatments.  Wikipedia talks about one called, “Dendritic cells can be stimulated to activate a cytotoxic response towards an antigen. Dendritic cells, a type of antigen presenting cell, are harvested from a patient. These cells are then either pulsed with an antigen or transfected with a viral vector. Upon transfusion back into the patient these activated cells present tumor antigen to effector lymphocytes (CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, and B cells). This initiates a cytotoxic response to occur against cells expressing tumor antigens (against which the adaptive response has now been primed). The Dendreon cancer vaccineProvenge, is one example of this approach.”  Alternative treatment options are always being discovered to help patients cope with LMS, as well as other cancers.

Dr. Joe Brown, a Naturopathic M.D. out of Tempe, Arizona, talks about why alternative therapy treatments, a diet change, or a combination of all three methods of treatment are best for LMS patients.

Although there are alternative and traditional treatment methods, some people believe that a diet change can completely cure cancer.  Doctors have done studies and they have found that it can help cure cancer along with a treatment method.  “Up to 40% of cancer patients die from complications of malnutrition, not from the disease itself,” say Dr. David Katz and Dr. Keith Block.  Chef Nancy out of Santa Fe, New Mexico wrote a book and created a website dedicated to helping people with better nutrition and diets during cancer.  The website says, “Chef Nancy creates recipes to keep you off the operating table and out of chemotherapy.”  The website also offers a blog, in which Chef Nancy talks about different foods and vitamins that both support and take away from curing cancer.  William W. Li, M.D., President and Medical Director of The Angiogenesis Foundation, created a post on the Dr. Oz website, where he talks about the best foods to go shopping for to cure cancer.  The Cancer Cure Foundation also offers a page on their site about food and spices that can help fight cancer including garlic, broccoli, leafy greens, nuts, lemon, raspberries, and chili peppers like jalapenos.  “They found capsaicin, an ingredient of jalapeno peppers, triggers cancer cell death by attacking mitochondria – the cells’ energy-generating boiler rooms.  The research raises the possibility that other cancer drugs could be developed to target mitochondria,” says an article published by the BBC.  The American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR) also has a page where they talk about, “how food can both directly and indirectly fight cancer.”  AICR says, “Fill at least 2/3 of your plate with vegetables, fruit, whole grains and beans.” The diet choices made by individuals will help cure their cancer, be it LMS or another type.

The research being done to find a cure for Leiomyosarcoma or other cancers maybe in the diet choices a person makes.  Traditional and alternative therapy methods of treating LMS are improved by proper diet choices.  In the southwest, a person with LMS might want to shop at Sprouts, “an independent natural foods grocery store chain that focuses on “healthy living for less.” We sell farm-fresh produce and thousands of natural, organic and great-tasting mainstream foods at remarkably low prices, in a non-traditional farmers’ market-type setting.”  Another natural grocery store LMS patients can frequent located anywhere in the US for healthy foods and organic produce is Whole Foods Market.  The Garden Fresh Restaurant Corporation created Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes restaurants to offer more healthy dining choices for people and would benefit people suffering from LMS or other cancers.  “With 112 company-owned restaurants in 15 states, over 300 million guests since 1978 have helped us to be #1 in fresh produce and salads, made-from-scratch soups, hot-tossed pastas, freshly baked breads and muffins, fresh fruit, frozen yogurt, and more,” says the Sweet Tomato website.  There are plenty of places for LMS patients to shop and eat healthy to help their cancer treatments across the US.

People who are diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma may think that they or that their families are alone in dealing with this disease.  This is not true because on Facebook, a page was created for LMS patients and their families called Leiomyosarcoma Awareness.  LMS patients are not the only one searching for a cure for their cancer or disease; plenty of people are, especially in alternative therapies.  One place a person might look is at Reddit, which has a subreddit for Alternative Health, where people post pages about possible alternative ways of curing diseases like LMS and other cancers.  No one is alone in his or her fight to survive and cure cancer.  Everyone is out there trying to find a cure, whether it’s by traditional, alternative, a combination of methods, or just eating healthier.

**Author’s Note: Please see your physicians for the right treatments for you or your loved one. This research was done 3 years ago and many new therapies and answers to help have come along. I am NOT a doctor; I am just a journalist that wanted to do                                                       a story on two subjects that were close to her.**

Food helps all cancers and diseases

salad

A previous article was written about how food helps cure Leiomyosarcoma.  All the treatments discussed in that article can also be applied to other cancers.  Food has always been a source of curing many diseases like digestive disorders and the flu.  Foods used to help cure all different kinds of cancer have been a very hot topic.  David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD created a website that chronicles his fight with a brain tumor and the diet change and foods he consumed to cure his cancer.  CureZone.com is another website dedicated to finding alternatives to medication and they have a specific page called “Foods That Heal.”  In 1921, Dr. Wiley wrote, “…that food would be the future, not drugs.” Eating to Prevent or Cure Disease is an article written about how foods can be used to cure certain digestive diseases.

citrus

Citrus fruits are a great source of vitamin C, which helps the immune system fight diseases and cancer (Photo by Christina Thompson 2012).

Dr. Peter D’Adamo is thinking progressively by creating diets that center around a person’s blood type.  It says on the website, “Blood Type O thrives on a lean, high protein diet.  Blood Type A thrives on a primarily vegetarian diet.  Blood Type B thrives on a mixed diet of meat, fish and dairy.  Blood Type AB thrives on a modified vegetarian diet.”  Having a diet centered on what is good for the body will help a patient with any disease.  Nutritionists, doctors, and naturopathic doctors can help people cure whatever disease they have, but the average person can start with a healthier diet on their own.

The Arizona Taco Festival found a new home this year at the Salt River Fields Sports Complex in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Philip Erdeljohn, a taco enthusiast, said, “It is crowded for a Sunday.  So many people here and I overheard a security guard say that there were 17,000 people here yesterday and they’re expecting the same today!”

This two day festival included mariachi bands, chef demonstrations, Lucha Libre wrestling, taco eating contest, food trucks, chili pepper eating contest, margaritas, a tequila expo, and even a wedding!  The wedding took place on Saturday.  There were also live bands for people to enjoy while eating their tacos.

The Taco Festival’s social media pages on Facebook and Twitter kept people informed of most of the activities.  “I liked that the parking was free and close, but I hated waiting in line for 15 minutes only to find out that I couldn’t use my cash money and had to use carnival raffle tickets to buy my food and drink!  They did not warn us that it would be like that on the website.  I would like to know something like that ahead of time,” said Philip.

SOPA affects everyone, including people in the culinary world

baked alaska

There are many variations on how Baked Alaska can be made, but this picture shows how people from the Food Network made it (Photo provided by the Food Network 2012).

The Internet, the infrastructure designed and built to expedite the ability to share information and knowledge faster than any modern form has reshaped our society; integrating into our lives seamlessly and creating modern nations into an “always-on” culture.  This power removes the effort of searching for a new restaurant; see its menu, or learning about what type of cooking/dishes they serve. Anyone not familiar with Baked Alaska can now search online video giant YouTube and see the process for how it is made, who makes the best, or potentially find links to a television series that specializes in baked goods. The creation of Twitter allows friends and family to communicate with each other, along with follow movie and television celebrities.  This would not be possible with the bill that was working its way through the legal system.  The SOPA bill would have halted this effortless flow of information in its tracks, for the sake of copyright protection and anti-piracy.

H.R 3261, as it was known in Congress, was propositioned as a bill that would assist copyright holders to protect their work by making the process to have their content removed less complicated, and give more protection to those works in the process. It was reassigned the name SOPA.  It was drafted to assist in the ability of intellectual property holders to gain assistance to infringed materials and covered the protection of copyright materials such as counterfeit goods for customer purchase, and unauthorized streaming of copyrighted media.

From the perspective of someone who uses the Internet, that would mean that favorite sites like Twitter, Flikr, YouTube, or Etsy, would cease to exist. Under the provisions put forth under SOPA, YouTube, which shares cooking giant Epic Meal Time, would have had the potential for DNS seizure by the federal government.  The deprivation of, “Bacon strips & bacon strips & bacon strips…” would be in due to the fact that YouTube is not solely made up of original content. If someone were to have uploaded a copyrighted item, such as a portion of a movie or song by a favorite artist, this would be legal grounds to seize the site by domain name and lead to further damages.

sea beans

Philip Erdeljohn, Network Engineer for American Express/HP, shared a personal and professional concern for the legalization of SOPA. “In my field of work, SOPA would not have necessarily caused an issue for a public company in the financial sector, but as someone who uses the Internet for everything from general browsing to searching for technical discussion and how-to, it would have been a major loss. If I wanted to learn how-to cook a nice steak dinner for my girlfriend, I’m going to look up a recipe and potentially how to cook it perfect. My happiness is riding on this.” Laughs aside, Philip is very serious and continues, “If SOPA did pass, it would have meant that because someone uploaded a song from The Doors to YouTube, I wouldn’t have been able to learn how to flambé, or how to potty train my cat.  The federal government would have gotten the green light to seize the Domain Name for YouTube, and pull the rug right out from under us. It was that serious.”

Cyber Security group Kaspersky Labs withdrew from the Business Software Alliance after discussions about SOPA and the conflicting stance the bill created. “Lobbying for a return to Jurassic copyright laws is like giving a blood transfusion to an already dead patient, risking the donor’s life. Governments should think about stimulating and developing new business models, rather than protecting old ones,” said Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky Lab.

my chef mom

The Internet has always been a source for people to find things they need.  Whether its for work or play.  People use it to find restaurants, the next food trend, jobs in the culinary industry, top culinary schools, following their favorite CelebriChef like Anthony Bourdain on Twitter or Facebook, or even creating their own Facebook fan page for themselves like one user did with My Chef Mom.  All these things would cease to exist if SOPA passed.  SOPA did not kill the Internet and that’s why there is the YouTube craze of PSY’s Gangnam Style.

Culinary “Misappropriation”: legal matters relating to Intellectual Property

bacon pie

This piece of a larger pie called the “Salty Hog Pie” from the Village Inn located in Phoenix, Arizona, but recipes can be found for similar pies on the Internet (Photo by Christina Thompson 2012).

In the world of food, legal matters do exist.  It is important for chefs and cooks to be held liable for their cooking and baking.  People know that there have been court cases relating to this topic, what people do not know is that there has been “culinary misappropriation” by chefs.  This is concerning their cuisine style choices and using other chef’s recipes without the permission of said chef.

One such example of the cuisine style choice was the feud between chef Eddie Huang and writer/editor Francis Lam.  The basic idea is that Francis Lam wrote about an American writer who made a successful Asian restaurant.  Chef Eddie Huang is calling the idea of white American chefs opening restaurants out of their ethnicity “culinary misappropriation.”  How do other chefs feel about this topic?  Chef Margaret Thompson said, “In a way, I can understand his point. We call this “bastardization.” Taking, say an Asian cuisine and having no roots in the culture, you make it how you think Asian, Italian, or whatever should be. It will no longer be authentic. Perhaps then this cuisine should be called fusion.  The argument for purity or misappropriation is no longer substantiated.”

The idea of fusion cuisine and having restaurants comes at a price to some chefs; some ideas for dishes and recipes may already exist for their place of business.  One example where a recipe was “stolen,” was on the show Top Chef: All-Stars.  What happened was that chef Richard Blais shared a recipe/dish idea with chef Mike Isabella, a competing chef on the show.  During a “Quick-fire Challenge,” Mike Isabella used the idea that he and chef Blais were talking about earlier in the day.  Judge and chef Tom Colicchio wrote an article about the episode and the intellectual property issue created by the dish.  In the article, he wrote, “That said, intellectual property laws do not govern dishes. Menu items that appear in one restaurant can be reproduced in another. Even recipes that appear in a published and copyrighted cookbook can be made in any restaurant in the world. In fact, if a chef changed one single ingredient, s/he could even reprint the recipe in his/her own cookbook.”

Autumn Chop Salad

This is an Autumn Chop Salad created by Chef Margaret Thompson for her family in Phoenix, Arizona from a recipe she found on the Internet (Photo by Christina Thompson 2012).

Chef Margaret Thompson has these feelings on the matter, “Well, I think all dishes come from the same recipe and chefs “re-create” them to make them their own.  If the customers do not like the latest spin on the recipe, the chef will go back and tweak it, until people are satisfied.  Lets take a tamale for instance; it is basically masa, lard, and some hot water on the outside, but there are hundreds of combinations of fillings. It all originated with a pork shoulder and went from there.   Each chef added or subtracted from the original recipe. Nobody really owns it.”

Another article presented about the “Blais v. Isabella issue” creates the idea of “Chef Law.”  Chef Law is explained as the following, “Chefs don’t use other chefs recipes.”  This is why there is a perceived problem among chefs.  Should chefs be punished for “culinary misappropriation”?  “If they out and out looked in the person’s recipe file or sat in their restaurant and took notes or pictures and used it in their own restaurant or in a contest or published this, then I say whatever rules/ consequences that apply to plagiarism should apply here,” said chef Thompson.

Each idea presents its own problems and solutions.  Chef Tom Colicchio said it best, “How often have we heard the chefs say that they were making dishes inspired by dishes their grandmothers used to make? In Quickfire Challenges, sometimes the chefs create a new dish on the spot; sometimes they do something inspired by other dishes. Yes, it’s bad form to lift a competing chef’s concept so baldly, and it is rotten for Richard that Mike did so, but Mike still had to execute the concept well. There’s no Intellectual Property law governing such a move, and no Top Chef law against it.”

This idea could be applied to people of other ethnicities opening restaurants outside their own ethnicity as well.  All that matters is how the food tastes to the people eating and enjoying it.

Survey and movie about Leiomyosarcoma being helped by food

spices

Fancy That on Facebook provided this great picture showing five great cancer fighting spices to help you cook healthier to fight your cancer (Photo Courtesy of Nutrition Solution Lifestyle 2012).

The movie introduced my thesis topic to the world with pictures and a narrative.  It also got me involved with communities on Facebook about this topic.  The Leiomyosarcoma Awareness page on Facebook is one that I am currently involved in and have been asked, “What kind of diet can I follow to help me?”  This is a great question that will be addressed through interviews with a Nutritionist and a Naturopathic Doctor.

food fight

These are the results for, “Which foods do you think will help fight cancer?” This clearly shows that people think that a change in diet involving these foods will help them fight, cure and prevent LMS and other cancers (Photo Courtesy of Survey Monkey 2012).

Dr. Oz offers an article on his site written by Dr. William Li about what you should buy to help prevent and cure cancer at the grocery store every week.  His list offers items such as leafy greens, specialty cooking oils, and fish.  Once again, The Cancer Cure Foundation offers a more extensive list that I took a lot of information from for my survey.  A poll was also created on Facebook and people who took it, said out of having to have chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and just changing their diet to cure/prevent cancer, they would change their diet.  This is really important information too.  All these ideas will be discussed with an Oncologist, who may give me the answer that the first three options I listed, maybe the only true way to fight cancer.  It is great that I make sure to get all sides of this story.

LMS ?

81.3% of people surveyed did not know about LMS before I presented a topic on it. It is one of the rarest cancers out there, so it is not surprising that many of you did not know about it (Photo Courtesy of SurveyMonkey 2012).

Many people have not heard of Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) before I brought it up.  I am like most of you, I did not know about it until my mother was diagnosed with it 10 years ago and had to have surgery to remove it.  She like most people with LMS only have the surgery option.  She has it again for the second time and is looking for a better alternative like changing her diet.  The most common forms of cancer that people know about are breast, ovarian, liver, lung, skin, testicular, prostate, colon, and leukemia.  There are plenty of others that people know about, but these are always in the news.

Friend/fam cancer

14 out of 16 people have had cancer themselves or know someone with cancer (Photo Courtesy of SurveyMonkey 2012).

My goal is to show that LMS, which is a rare cancer, can be treated by a simple change in diet.  This information could be applied to other cancers, both rare and widely known.  Most everyone either has cancer themselves or knows someone coping with it.  I want to be the journalistic voice that provides answers to all of you.

Leiomyosarcoma and food to help with cancer are new concepts to a lot of people

Leiomyosarcoma was first diagnosed in 1994 according to a Case Study done by the University of Ontario.  Many people are not familiar with this disease as it is very rare that people even have it.  This cancer only accounts for 5%-10% of all soft tissue sarcomasThe Cancer Cure Foundation has provided a list of foods that people can eat to both, prevent or cure cancer.  Below is a survey that I would like people to take to help me understand the need for this article and what people actually know about this cancer and food to help prevent or cure cancer.  This research is important because it will provide a gauge to help me with future articles and other articles on the topic.  Leiomyosarcoma awareness is important, especially for females because it can be found in the uterus.  Prevention and cure of any cancer is important, but the severity of this cancer and the only option is to currently remove it.  Hopefully my research will help show that food can help cure and prevent this cancer.

Most of the desert southwest borders Mexico and therefore has a lot of Mexican influence on food and drink.  There is also a higher population of Mexican-Americans in the area, especially in larger cities like Phoenix, Arizona.  One company realized this and created Pro’s Ranch Markets with seven locations across the Phoenix metro area, two in El Paso, Texas and two in New Mexico.  The grocery store company of Fry’s also created a specifically Mexican store in Phoenix called the Fry’s Mercado.  The food that is in these stores relates to Mexican cuisine.  A small list of ingredients is found at IndyWeek.com.

Mexican cuisine like all the other cuisines found around the world is a culinary adventure and it is nice when specific stores become dedicated to serving the people that like to serve their cuisine.
